Formed in 1956, the purpose of the Friends of Johnson County Library is to support Johnson County Library by promoting community involvement and interest in the library’s functions, services, resources, and needs. In other words, we are the advocacy support arm for Johnson County Library.
The purpose of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Johnson County Library is stewardship and community representation while providing oversight of the organization.
While we work closely with our library partners, we are an independent 501(c)(3) and receive no public funding.

All Directors must:
- Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs and needs;
- Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements;
- Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for Friends and the Library;
- Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing and can influence public policy;
- Attend as many Friends and Friends-sponsored Library activities as possible;
- Maintain a current Patron-level Friends’ membership or join as a lifetime member;
- Serve their entire term and consider serving a second term;
- Attend all Board meetings throughout the year and provide prior notice to the President of an absence, if possible (per the Bylaws, a Director who is absent from three consecutive meetings without just cause may be asked to resign);
- Participate actively in one or more committees and carry out appropriate assignments outside monthly Board and committee meetings;
- Consider serving as an officer or in other leadership roles;
- Volunteer for Friends over the course of the year and record those hours in the designated tracking system.
