Summary: The Controller oversees the accounting operations and comprehensive reporting for Guadalupe Centers, Inc. (GCI). Collaborating closely with the CEO, CFO, senior leadership, and staff, the Controller actively engages in presentations to the Board of Directors, Board Finance Committee, and various stakeholders. This pivotal role requires a hands-on approach to financial management and effective communication at both executive and board levels to ensure transparency and alignment with organizational goals.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Financial Management
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations, developing and implementing financial policies and procedures, and ensuring sound fiscal management.
- Develop, analyze, and make recommendations related to accounting and financial systems to ensure effective, and efficient financial operations that are consistent with organizational priorities.
- Establish and maintain an effective system of internal controls.
Accounting and ReportingOversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with FASB and GAAP accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Oversees the accounting department, ensuring the integrity of accounting systems, and manages all financial activities to ensure fidelity of data and accurate and timely reporting.
- Maintain accurate financial records, prepare and analyze financial statements and generate reports for management, GCI’s finance committee, board and other stakeholders.
- Oversee all program and grant accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund periods.
Financial Analysis and Reporting
- Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner, clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep CFO abreast of GCI's financial status.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, and provide reports and recommendations to support decision making.
Payroll and Benefits:
- Oversee the payroll function and related systems including the coordination of benefits with payroll and HR.
- Oversee payroll reporting and maintenance of employer tax records.
Compliance and Audit
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards (FASB and GAAP), tax regulations, and nonprofit reporting requirements.
- Coordinate internal and external audits, including the gathering of required audit information, IRS forms, information, and filing activity and implementation of any corrective actions.
- Together with the accounting team, strive to obtain clean audits for all entities for each fiscal year.
Team Leadership
- Supervise the accounting team, provide training and development and ensure efficient operations.
- Maintain continuous lines of communication and keep the CFO informed of all accounting issues.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire the GCI team and outside accounting officials.
- Train the accounting department staff regarding proper accounting practices to ensure compliance with FASB and GAAP accounting standards, including reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Leverage strengths of the current accounting team members, help clarify roles and responsibilities, and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Review income and expenditures against budget and/or a wide variety of account information to ensure the accuracy of reported information, availability of funds, and compliance with established financial guidelines and program policies, practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare accounting procedures and policies as needed and ensure that they are clear and well documented.
Cash Management
- Manage cash flow, bank reconciliations, and ensure adequate funding for programs and operations.
Strategic Financial Planning
- Support the development and implementation of strategic financial plans and goals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is required.
- Licensed Certified Public Accountant or Master’s Degree preferred.
- Experience in non-profit and/or business accounting and financial services.
- Experience in real estate financing for non-profit entities.
- Solid knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
- A thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), as well as Governmental Accounting Standards (GAS), and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) pronouncements.
- Up-to-date knowledge of nonprofit expertise regarding audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
- Knowledge of financial compliance and risk management including but not limited to statutory and regulatory requirements for nonprofit organizations.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate and present accounting and financial requirements to program directors and other staff.
- Excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills; ability to prioritize and demonstrate an appropriate sense of urgency.
- A demonstrated history of successfully implementing/integrating systems, policies, and protocols.
- Demonstrated ability to work and lead project teams, analyze a variety of financial and statistical information, work under time constraints, communicate with diverse groups of people, meet deadlines and schedules, set priorities, and work with detailed information.
- Ability to work under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; tracking budget expenditures.
- Superior detail orientation balanced with the ability to see the overall “big picture”.
- Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment.
- Proven track record of success managing and coaching others.
