Position Summary: The Vice President of Operations and Finance is a key member of the senior leadership team, responsible for overseeing the financial health, operational efficiency, and resource management of the organization. This role ensures that the nonprofit’s operations, systems, and financial practices align with its mission and strategic goals. The Vice President leads SKC’s internal accounting functions, including payroll, financial reporting, and compliance.  The position provides operational oversight of critical service areas such as Human Resources, Fund Development, and Database Services.  Additionally, the position directs internal marketing and communications, staff development, and client-facing training and experience initiatives. The ideal candidate brings expertise in financial management, operational leadership, and cross-functional supervision with a strong focus on innovation, efficiency, client service, and compliance.
 
Support Kansas City (SKC) is a nonprofit organization that enables other nonprofit organizations to focus on their missions by providing integrated expertise in financial management and other back-office support in the greater Kansas City community.
 
Location and Culture: SKC is located in Merriam, KS. Staff work in a hybrid model of being in the office three to four days per week, and working remote the other days of the week. New employees will be trained in the office for the first 90 days.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
Financial Management

  • Develop and oversee the organization’s financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, and planning.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting for the CEO, Board of Directors, and funders.
  • Manage financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and auditing.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, including nonprofit-specific requirements.
  • Monitor cash flow, financial performance, and funding needs to ensure long-term sustainability.
 Operational Leadership
  • Develop and implement policies and systems to optimize operational efficiency and resource utilization.
  • Oversee facilities management, including space planning, maintenance, and technology infrastructure.
  • Lead organizational risk management efforts, including disaster recovery, safety, and security planning.
  • Oversee organizational insurance coverage and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with program leadership to ensure effective program delivery and alignment with organizational goals.
 Service Area Oversight
  • Provide leadership and direction for the Human Resources, Fund Development (including Grant Writing), and Database service areas.
  • Ensure alignment of service area operations with organizational standards, client needs, and strategic goals.
  • Guide staff in effective delivery of services to nonprofit clients and internal stakeholders.
 Marketing, Communications, and Business Development
  • Oversee the development and implementation of SKC’s internal and external marketing and communications strategies.
  • Ensure brand alignment and consistency across all platforms and materials.
  • Support the CEO in business development efforts and relationship cultivation with current and prospective clients.
 Client Engagement and Training
  • Lead strategies to enhance client experience and satisfaction across SKC service lines.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of client training programs to ensure understanding and effective use of SKC services.
 Strategic Leadership
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and senior leadership team, contributing to long-term planning and organizational growth.
  • Provide operational and financial analysis to inform decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Support the development and implementation of key initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.
 Team Leadership and Development
  • Supervise and mentor staff, fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration.
  • Lead efforts to improve operational and financial systems, processes, and policies.
  • Promote professional development and training opportunities across the organization to support staff growth and capacity building.
 Qualifications
 
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, nonprofit management, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in finance and operations, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
  • Proven experience managing organizational budgets, financial reporting, and operational systems.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards and compliance requirements.
 Skills and Competencies
  • Strong leadership and management skills with a proven ability to lead cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency in financial and operational management software; experience with nonprofit tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Salesforce) is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits: This position is full-time. The schedule is flexible and allows for some remote work options after 90 days of employment. Salary range is $75,000 to $90,000 and will be commensurate with experience. This position receives 20 days paid time off annually and 10 paid holidays per year. SKC covers 80% of employee medical benefits, and provides a 401K match, and life insurance.
